Comment: OK, her goes.. I am trying to share a cable internet connection between my computer (server) and and my friends (client). Server has two NICs, a 10Mbps Realtek RTL8029(AS) for internet connection (functions fine) and a 10/100 Kingston KNE120TX for the LAN. The LAN card goes through a cycle of appearing to work, then not, giving "network cable unplugged" as the reason. That same error message appears on the client permanently. The LAN card is set to use IP address 192.168.0.1 and the card on the client 192.168.0.2. TCP/IP is the only protocol installed along with Client for Microsoft networks and File and printer sharing. I'm fairly sure the problem does not lie with the client PC or NIC as when I use my 10Mbps NIC (IP set to 192.168.0.1) the LAN works (Therefore I assume the cable is fine as well). I can also ping the LAN NIC using Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

Reply: (edit)Pinging the loopback adapter doesn't really prove anything. That is not pinging the card, it's pinging the TCP/IP stack. My first test would be to set the LAN card to 10 mps. It may be trying to connect at 100mps even if set to auto. This will give the unplugged status. Try that and let us know if that helps.

Reply: (edit)you do not say if you are using a hub or how you physically have the network setup, if you are going from nic to nic, you will need a crossover cable.

Reply: (edit)The NICs in either machine are linked via 10m of x-over a coupler and 8m UTP. Changing the LAN card to 10Mbps (tried both full and half) and leaving the client on auto results in an extremely unstable connection. Pinging from one machine to the other results in most of the requests being timed out. I did manage to actually see the other machine once. As yet we have not been able to access shared drives.

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem, where I was sharing 100Mbps between 2 computers, using a 2 port passive hub. A message kept coming up saying "Network Cable Unplugged". As soon as I changed the NIC from auto-sense to 10mbps it stopped. I even put the machines onto a 10Mbps hub instead of a 100Mbps switch, which worked as well.

Reply: (edit)It sounds like you're having the same problem that I am. I found a page on Microsoft's web site about this problem - it has to do with "Media Sense". MS's web site shows how to disable the check, and your network will work, but you will still get the !@%##&%#$*(^ message popping up.
