Problem statement:
NetBIOS function fails when using a dial up connection on Win2kHardware configuration:
„h OS: WIN2K professional
„h External Modem
„h No Network adapter
„h TCPIP as the only network protocolWindows 2000 network configuration:
Client side:
DHCP is enabled
Dial up adapter is used
Windows 2000 WINS being usedServer side (Windows NT4)
RAS settings:
The RAS settings in the RAS server registry that matter had the values as indicated below in our case:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Remoteaccess\parameters
EnableBroadcast 1
RemoteListen 2
Problem Scenario:
Through the modem we dialed to the RAS server whose services are required using only TCPIP as the network transport. We have a service "Licensing requestor" which tries to obtain LANA's using the NetBIOS() call (NCBENUM). This call fails to get the LANA numbers. However, at this stage we can map to network shares on our network indicating that the network is alive. We also wrote a small app which uses this call and prints the result. The behavior is the same.
We feel that there is some problem with this call.
When NetBEUI is installed the NetBIOS() call returns valid LANA's and the small app as well as our requestor run successfully. Conclusion:
On other windows platforms (Win95 and WinNT) the license requestor service is able to obtain LANA's using the NetBIOS() call.We feel that there is a problem with NetBIOS when TCPIP is the only transport for the dialup adapter on Win2k.
