Need to enter E-mail password manua

In spite of requesting my PC to "remember" my E-mail password I am obliged to enter it manually each time I wish to download E-mails (using Outlook Express in IE v 6). The dialog box requiring manual entry of PW has the "remember" tick box greyed out.
Is this a bug, have I done something wrong in setup and does anyone know how to overcome this minor but irritating requirement?
