Comment: Hi all, I have been working with my friend over the phone trying to get her machine (AMD K6-2 box running Win 2000) after a nasty virus. She installed NAV and got rid of it and we have most everything back to working with the exception of a "can't find Winupdate" error message on boot-up. I sent her a copy of msconfig which shows that there is a winupdate trying to run on startup. I have disabled that but the problem persists. Other than being annoying it doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Windows Update is working fine as is everything else. However it would be good to get rid of this error message. Any suggestions? Thx Gary

Reply: Gary: One of the updates available from the Windows Update webpage, is a little program to automatically tell you when updates are available and install them. I suspect that thes the "Windows Update" error message that she gets is related to this. See if you can download that update, again, or uninstall it through add/remove programs.

Reply: I had the same problem; the error appeared on every re-boot after removing the virus. My fix was: 1. Run regedit 2. Click registry, then Export registry file..., click on All, then save the file. 3. Click edit, then find winupdate. 4. Delete the line(s) when found. 5. Note: Don't delete the line windowsupdate, this is a unrelated registry setting. Only delete those that match EXACTLY.
