My local DSL ISP uses static IP
addresses that change every month or so
for security reasons. So my IP address
changes every once and a while and I
don't know what it changes too. The
problem is is that Windows2000
auto-detects the IP address you are
using and then locks it in somehow, so I
can't change it and the OS is locked with
the IP address after it has been installed-
so when the IP addresses change I am
left with no bandwidth and no way to
change my IP address. In Win2000 help it
said to go into my Network Connections
and in one of the dialogues to set it to
enter IP address manually. Since the IP
changes frequently I have no idea what to
enter and I really don't want to have to
reenter this info all the time+ the added
irritance of having to contact my ISP
reexplain my problem and ask for my
current IP address which they may be
inclined not to even give to me. How can I
"unlock" my Win2000 IP information so
that I can get back online? Thanks

Go into the Control Panel and click on "Network and Dial-up Connections" then Right click on your ISP connection ICON. Then on "PROPERTIES". Then on "Networking". Now click on the "properties" button under the TCP/IP window. Look around this page and you will see a button that says "Obtain IP Address automatically" make sure it is clicked.

Hi Fielding Greaves :), your ISP provides you with a dynamic IP...NOT static IP. If you are going to change your IP to static IP...first you must have your own static IP..otherwise you will lost connection with your ISP.
