Hi everyone:

recently I just start to study 'MCSE', and a lot of topic require me to setup a domain controller. Now, I got a stand alone pc, and is not connect to anywhere, it got win2k advance serve on it, but I'm having hard time to setup the machines as domain control just by itself. I was wondering anybody can help me for it?

Thanks for answering my question. What don't I describle the problem step by step, see how you think.

1. I started with the acitive directory.
2. on the dialog box, I select domain controller for a new domain
3. Then I select creat a new domain tree.
4. It ask me DNS name, so I just make up "domain.tsli.com"
5. It also ask me a Doman NETBISO name. I made up another one call "TSLI".
6. I just following the default directory for database "c:\wint\ntds"
7. On the location for sysvol I also select the default "c:\winnt\sysvol"
8. After that a dialog said "The wizard cannot contact DNS sever that handle the "domain.tsli.com" to determini if it support dynamice update. Confirm DNS configuration or install figure a DNS serve on this computer"
8. A brand new wiard show up. This time is configure DNS. I check on "yes, install and configure on the computer."
9 I select premission compatible only on WIN2K serve.
10. It asked for password. So, I enter the password.
11. The activi directory install fail appear said"The operate failed with error. The Network location cannot be reach. For information about troublshooting, please look up help."

The help on win2k sever doesn't help at all. I hope someone there know how to solve it. Thanks!!

It's your computer connected to some kind of network or hub? if not that's is the problem. Your server its looking for network connection. You need to connect your server to a hub.

it is not adviced to use any name such as .com .edu, etc. unless you are authorized to use them. for starter use what the book said .msft which stands for microsoft. Before you install active directory, you need to configure dns first, and then run the command dcpromo.exe, it will promote it to be a dc.

remember do(configure) the dns first.....
