Comment: We are running Windows 2000 on three computers and sharing one internet connection with a fast ethernet connection (LAN). We had a tech support person install a proxy server (Analogx-shareware). Now I cannot use chat programs such as Instant Messenger (AOL). Question: do we even need the proxy with our setup?

Reply: (edit)Yes and No......if you just want to share a connection. Windows 2000 has that feature built into its peer to peer networking. It quite easy to enable. The host machine that has the internet connection needs two NIC cards.....one for the modem and the other card to allow the client machines access over the network to the Internet connection. I use a proxy program by Avirt. Which allows internet sharing and handles mail accounts to multiple users. It works quit well and is very easy to setup. It is the only proxy software that I have found so far that allows Windows 2000 and Windows 9x machines to connect reliably. I would be careful setting up just any proxy server software.......you could get into conflicts later with other software. I have tried several packages and they all say they are easy to setup. Avirt is the only one I have found that is easy to setup and is reliable. I am using it as I write this. You can check out there software at Avirt.com I'm using the Gateway Suit 4.0.

Reply: (edit)yes you do... a proxy server is used to share internet connections over the lan with just one internet connection. I use "wingate" to do this. then.. you must identify or point the other pcs software that you are using a firewall or socks... you must setup the software (like aol instant msgr) to point to your proxyserver.

Reply: (edit)Maybe you must set the right permissions for the winsock service?

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem. You might need to re-install the proxy client on your machine

Reply: (edit)We are operatong a Win2000 based Computer as Intranet Server and Internet-Proxy. If you do not want to pay an awful lot of money, try the sambar server at www.sambar.com. This one is free of charge ( you have to pay 75 Dollars if you want to use the Mailserver as well) and we are running ms chat and it works with no problem at all.
