OS: win2k pro

Comment:

OS started freezing (Mouse and KB), at first when certain apps were opened, now during boot-up (at point where log-on window opens). System boots and functions in safe mode.
Question: how do I determine which component is causing the freeze?
System operated fine since new (three months), freezes started occuring once or twice a week, then every day or so, and now I can't boot normally. All SP's and updates current. At first I thought a mainboard issue, but then that wouldn't explain why I cn boot in safe mode, would it? Is there a way to log what the last thing is to load before the lock?
Thanks
John

With a problem like that. It seems you have had the problem for a while and over time it has just kept getting worse and worse. The problem could be many things but my recommendation for security purposes would be to download all the SP's and MDAC and burn them to disk or Zip. Then unplug your networking cable or modem what ever access you have to the net. Then Reload your your os and install all your service packs and MDAC and set your security setting on your C: before connection back to the net. Your problem sounds like a software conflict or possible virus. I had the same problem on a server @ work about 2 mths ago and this is the steps I used and havent had a prob since. Feel free to contact me if I can assist you in anyway with this.

It sounds more like a virus than anything else. Run a good virus checker and a trojan checker and maybe adaware make sure its not something that can be removed before you go to the trouble of starting over

I've run Norton AV, both from my machine and from my wife's (networked) - nada. AD Aware too. I run Diamond TDS anti trojan and Sygate firewall behind a NAT router/dsl modem, so if it's a virus/trojan it's very, very stealthy.
I've also ran MS Regclean, which found/fixed a number of errors, but didn't eliminate the problem.
Arrughhh!
