I'm the new IT Assistant at the UMD Health Center. So far things are good, but there's one issue that's got me baffled. Little help?

The WebServer is Win2K SP4 (IIS 5). The site is a local intranet. Till recently it's been as fast as the rest of the internet, but lately there's been some unexplainable slowdown. The slothiness is pretty bad, requiring about ten seconds per pageload.

The slowdown also seems pretty random. On some computers on the network, it's mostly slow with brief periods of normal speed. On others it's the reverse. Sometimes the same machine will be mostly slow/sometimes fast on one day, or the reverse the next day. Sometimes it's slow on one browser but fast on others, or slow on all, or fast on all.

Needless to say, this is maddening. I can't pinpoint where the issue is. I've even swapped out the switch that the server is directly plugged into in the hopes that it was a hardware problem. Didn't change a thing.

The change happened after my meddling with the server in order to get PHP talking to IIS virtual SMTP. My co-worker and friend said I should have documented my changes, and the lesson is now well learned. However, I still need to solve this problem. If you need more info just ask. HiJackThis is installed on the server, and I have performed thorough AntiSpyware/Virus scans on the system, as well as a paranoid execution of Disk Cleanup/Defrag for every slight boost of performance I could squeeze out of the magically slow server.

Help!!

Do Consult peers before doing this.

I can give you work around until you find the problem

If you have another server (That would be best in case you have more users accessing site) or even workstation(2000Professional) can do. where you can have the site hosted for time being and then later shifted to server.

This would look bit different
i.e. if systems name is ABC1 and Site Name UMD

links should look like this
http://abc1/UMD/index.htm

Note: index.htm is assumed to be startup page.

or more through DNS it is long but you can give name http://health.umd.com on local network (Creat a Zone umd.com and 'A' record health which point to IP of the system)
and point it to System which have the site hosted(Site hosted and not in default WEB site in IIS ). But in this case additional IP has to assigned to the system where site is hosted i.e. DNS needs to have static IP for the site name .
