My CDRW thinks it is a DVD-ROM!!!!

Well, here we go. My Lite-on 16x cdrw used to work on my windows 2000 pro OS. It was really slow, and I don't know why, but that's besides the point. One day, I tried to copy a cd using a new program(adaptec), and it said that it couldn't detect and cd-recording devices. i thought this was odd, so i tried using my old program, nero. It didnt detect a cd writer either. Hmm. So i checked out the properties under device manager, and it showed that I had a lite-on 16/210b or whatever it is, but that it was a cd/dvd rom drive. I didn't change drivers, or do anything different to my computer. I thought I could simply reinstall the lite-on driver and it would remember that it was a writer. Well, although that may sound like a good, reasonable idea, liteon doesn't provide any drivers for my cdrw!!!! In fact, it actually says to use windows default drivers. Either i'm really dumb, or this can't be dumb, because i can't make windows think that this is a cd writer, so it won't use and cd writer drivers.(heh heh)
In short, my cd writer works, but only if it knows what it is. I have never heard of this sort of problem, and was wondering if there were any really smart people out there who could help!
Thanks
Caleb

Open the Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools. Now click on Computer Management.

If the screen is not split into two parts then click on the Console Tree button to split it.

Now Click on the "+" next to Removable Storage. Now on the "+" next to Physical Location.

Right Click on the CD-DVD or CDRW that is listed there and then on the "properties"

Look on the Media Tab and make sure it is listed as a CD-ROM and CDRW. It has to be listed as both in this window.

Well, I went and performed the tasks that you said, and sure enough, it was only listed as a cd-rom. I added cdrw to that, thinking that that would fix it. I restarted my computer and it did not fix it. The properties still say it is a cd-rom, even though under computer management, it is still listed as cdrom and cdrw-like I changed it to. Is there something else I need to do to make this work? Thanks!!!

Hi. I think the problem is that you've installed Adaptec and Nero on the same computer which is a big no-no my friend. Use one or the other so choose one and uninstall the other. Unfortunately, Adaptec leaves a lot of s---ty files behind even after an uninstalling it, so Nero may not work. I don't know exactly how to completely purge Adaptec from your system, but I read a post about that topic somewhere in this place. Don't worry about what windows says your burner is. The drivers for burning come with the burner software. I hope that steers you in the right direction.

I did everything there, and completely removed all cd-burning applications, and then reinstalled burn and go, and still no work. Any Ideas!!!!
