Multiple NICs in WIN2k to increase throughput?

Wondering if someone can lend some advice; Im running a Win2k Adv. File Server connected to a FastEthernet switch. I've noticed a network bottleneck at the server when several users are accessing it. Can I implement another NIC on the same machine connected to the same switch to increase throughput? If so, how do i go about doing this? I've looked at Gigabit options but they're not in the budget.

thanks in advance to anyone

I haven't try this but I think the server sluggished because the CPU can't handle it. Another NIC, I think it will behave the same, it might look different but just the feeling. May be I'm wrong and I'd like to hear from other experts.

You may, for example, subnetting your network and assign addresses from different subnets to different NICs.

Thanks for the input guys. But using system monitor indicates higher NIC utilization. The CPU is definitely not the problem here. I've thought about the subnetting but I would rather have clients have a single point of access. Ive done some looking around, and discovered that my solution is "bandwidth aggregation" - using 2 or more NICs to parallel task , similar to dual CPUs. 3com and Adaptec offer these "server" NICs with the included special software. Knowing this is now possible, can this be done through Win2k's Advs Network Load Balancing or is that something totally different?

I would really appreciate any expert opinions re: my situation.

Thanks again in advance.

Any time you can run two nic's it will help, create your second sub net. Compaq does this with a dual nic card with two seprate IP addresses in one nic card If that doesn't work get a faster computer :-).

What I want to do is install multiple NICs on the server and combine them to form one "virtual" NIC with one IP, thus increasing throughput - kinda like dual CPUs. For example, combining 2 100baseTx NICs running at Full Duplex and plugging both straight into a full duplexed 100baseTx switch giving a throughput of 400mbs. As mentioned, I know there are server NICs (ie 3Com and Adaptec) that are capable of bonding, parallel tasking and using "bandwidth aggregation" with the use of their proprietary software.

All i want to know is whether i can do this with Win2K Adv. Server.

Yes you can. Have w2k server and advanced servers running this way works great.

Yes, but has anyone seen a solution that works in Win2K professional???

Perry,

So you have multiple NICS in your servers? Do you use any proprietary software to make this work? Or do you have Win2K advanced server configured to do this? If so, could
you let me know how?

To Geir,

this would be possible in Win 2K PRO using those server NIC Cards with the special software. But you could also try this software from IP metrics called NIC Express.
It does the same thing. Find out more at

I am also wanting because I to load balance through 2 NICs on Win2000 server. I have dual PIII 850s with more than 1gb of RAM. Performance monitor suggests a large bottleneck at the NIC.

I think our question here is: Does Windows 2000 allow you to put 2 NICs in and balance the load with a single IP address on the two NICs? If so, how?

Windows Load Balancing Services (WLBS) is not what we are looking for. That allows you to load ballance between several WEB servers. Thanks for any direction on this.

I use the IP Metrics product mentioned above on
my W2K servers and even a few workstations.

I use it primarily for failover. However, it
works great for doubling throughput.

You can download it at their web site:
