I just installed MSN Messenger on my system. In order to do so I had to install Internet Explorer, the most up to date version. However when I try to log into Messenger, it hangs. When I type in my password it gets as far as saying "signing in" and the two coloured dolls dance round a bit, then it comes back with the message "Click below to sign in". However at this point the program is in a hung state and no buttons or menus respond. I have verified that the password is correct.

A "cut and shut" solution would be to use another
messenger, like Pidgin.

A real solution would be to learn about how MS is limiting
support for those older systems, and that you must make
sure you have the correct version of the messenger that will
still connect to their service.

2000 is old now, Microsoft are persuading people to
upgrade.

I POAST THRAD!!!!!!!!111!1!1!!

I installed Pidgin but I can't get it to work properly either. When I open it all I get is a "Buddy List" and I can't find a place to type the actual chat. If I send an IM it only allows me to enter the E-mail address, there's no place to type the actual message. I tried MSN Messenger again but every time I try to log into it it hangs and I have to close it from the Task Manager. Is there any MSN-compatible program out there that actually works properly?

I think your computer is fux0red.

If my replies look messed up, I'm sorry. I use Safari on a Mac the majority of the time, and the web hasn't really caught up yet.

Well I am now on another computer with Windows 2000. I installed MSN on this PC for the first time, this evening. I tried logging in and got the same results. The dolls danced then it said "Please click below to sign in" (while hung). It's MSN that's fux0red, not my computer I think! It's the latest version of MSN and it hangs when I log in. Surely someone must have experience of this?

There is a special version that MS released for Windows 2000 that will connect to their service.

Now, they've been pushing to make their service MSN Messenger Live compatible only, but naturally, they had to cater for customers still running this older OS. It's been a while, but after doing some googling with funky terms like 'MSN Messenger Windows 2000' I finally found it.

If not, then I can only guess they've now completely cut off their < Windows XP customers. Which is a shame, but it's how business works. Besides, XP has similar sys. reqs. to 2000, can be picked up for buttons nowadays and would run on just about anything Pentium II flavoured and above.

Your PC (Celeron?) would/should run it fine. Never heard of a Celeriac. Perhaps it's time to fork out.

Why serve in heaven when you can reign in hell?

Had the same problems myself with MSN Messenger on Win2K - tried 4.0, 5.0, 7.0, 8.x and nothing worked even though information on the net stated that version 7.0 should work. Eventually found that the exact version that works is 7.0.0820. And it does (for me, anyway).

Version 7.0.0820 can be downloaded from MS here:
