I am reposting an earlier thread because I have had several requests for the fix, but cannot post the fix to the older thread because it's "too old". Here's the original question followed by the "fix"

MSDTC service has stopped on my w2k IIS5 server. When i try to start the service i get the following error message (abbreviated):
Windows can not start DTC on local computer, For more info see event logs. If error is non-Microsoft the refer to vendor with service specific error code -1073737669

The event logs show:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSDTC
Event Category: SVC
Event ID: 4129
Date: 02/04/2003
Time: 13:25:53
User: N/A
Computer: WEB2000
Description:
Could not locate the MS DTC Transaction Manager contact object.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7024
Date: 02/04/2003
Time: 13:25:53
User: N/A
Computer: WEB2000
Description:
The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service terminated with service-specific error 3221229627.

hope that makes sense to some one out there as seems to be no mention of MSDTC stopping of it own accord anywhere!!

Fix:
Someone who actually figured out the problem sent the fix to me, but was unable to post to the old thread. I don't feel at liberty to publish someone else's full name, but thanks very much to George! Here's his email with the fix (below. It worked for me! - Carolyn

.......I had the same problem with MSDTC today and found your comment on computing.net. I managed to fix it and thought it might be of use to you if you hadn't found the answer yet. I tried to post the answer but the thread was too old. This is what I found:

I ran regmon while trying to start the DTC service and found that access was denied to registry key HKLM\software\classes\SVCID

On going into regedt32 I found that all the permissions for this key were missing. I reset them and everything works fine now - very strange!!

- George
