Is there any truth to the rumour of the 98 version sometimes working and sometimes ~not~, and the one from XP should be used?

I did a search in this forum late last week and found several strings reflecting the above. Pro's & Con's. No definite answer. It was enough to make me hedge running the 98 version on my 2K machine. There is a posting (here in this forum) of an available version, but it's unclear which version it is.

There is a version for Win2K and XP that can be downloaded from Microsoft. It's and .exe file that runs by itself instead of through control panel. Don't know exactly where to find it. You might try searching for Windows XP powertoys

You can also try a couple of other programs.

Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is an excellent program for setting programs at startup. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Spybot also has this feature when you run in the advanced mode. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Yeah, went there, did that, I couldn't find it either. Checked Powertoys etc too. I spent about thirty minutes searching the M$/XP site. Could not find a direct stand alone program/utility download. I do have Mike Lin's Startup program, but I'd like to use the M$ XP version.

BTW, the posting I was referring to in my last reply was:

Dan Penny,

I haven't heard that rumor. But if you believe the MD5 hash, they're the same.

Timo,

If you don't have a 98 or XP CD, I can email it to you.

An inquiring mind might wonder why it was left out of w2k.

FWIW, I can never find anything on M$ unless somebody has a very current link.

Er, it was Mechanix2Go that offered the email to you, not me.

Mechanix2Go, I have the "Official" XP Home CD, can you tell me the path for the XP version?

Msconfig for Win2000 can be found here

http://webpages.charter.net/bdube/downloads.html

Scroll down the page.

I have a short cut on my desktop and the program will run just as in Win98 etc.

Hi Dan Penny,

I don't know what version I have, because I've never used it. But here's what I got:

C:\temp\->dir/s/b r:\msconfig*.*
r:\I386\MSCONFIG.CH_
r:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_
r:\WinXP.SP1\SP1\msconfig.ex_

Hi all

Two files ( the XP versions ) are needed for W2K

MSCONFIG.EXE goes into WINNT\System32 folder

MSCONFIG.CHM goes into WINNT\Help folder

If anybody wants the two files, I can email them.

Krystyna
