I am running Win2000 and my mouse has disappeared from the device manager. Tried rebooting several times but did not work. Changed to a serial mouse and it worked fine. But when I tried plugging in an USB mouse, both keyboard and mouse stopped working. Any clues as to what could be the problem

I have the same problem - the serial mouse no longer exists, and there is no "Pointing Devices and Mouse" class in the add hardware section. I cannot install from the .inf file (it says that it does not match my hardware) The registry seems ok (the settings match those of the other similarly configured computers. The mouse works (it actually works in the bios pages)..... v. frustrating

thats because by default win2k has the /fastdetect switch on startup wich disables detecting mice thru a serial port
