I am having problems with my monitor under windows 2k professional. It is almost fine, but if you look at the screen closely (please refer to screenshots) then you will see vertical bars next to textboxes, and strange shadowing next to letters. Can somebody please help me fix this, as this makes it impossible to look @ the monitor for more than an hour or so.

Thank you for reading, hope you are able to help.

The screenshots with the problem can be found at:

Are you using 2000 default drivers, or have you gone to the monitor manufacturer's driver website to download the latest 2000 drivers?

I am using the default drivers for Windows 2000, and will try to get the latest manufacturer drivers from HP. However, I do not think this should be an issue, I think it has something to do w/the monitor itself.
I will post an update if the drivers do the trick.

Thanks for helping.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you placed any speakers near the monitor, or any other device that would have a magnet in the device? Have you tried using your monitor settings to degauss the screen?

Update from before: I did find the the drivers for my monitor, (HP D2842A) and downloaded & installed them, but this had no effect. I am beginning to think this a problem with the monitor hardware, has anybody else had similar difficulties?

I have speakers and a cordless phone on the desk, but they are not close to the monitor, I have also tried to move these devices totally away from the desk, all to no avail. Degaussing does not have an effect either. Could there be a problem with the monitor tube that is causing this? I am sorry for the vague description of the problem above, but I think the screenshots give a good example of what I mean. Thanks again.

have you used an extension cable for your monitor? It looks like interference. The vertical lines are "echoes" of the text box.
If you're not using an extension cable try another vga cable, maybe yours is bad quality...
also this appears on ati pci cards like the 7500 (I have one myself), because on that card there is an extra smaal cable that connects the print with the external connector.

i do not use 2000 as of yet but will be soon, anyways my advice applies to computer basics, if there is a problem with your monitor hardware then you can not take a screen shot of it, you will need to use a camera to do this. the only thing that you've done is elinate that its the operating system. bassed on what you've said i have seen this problem on 2 computers 1 running 95b and the other running 98se they had lines and such that resemble what you've described. i can guess that is in fact magnectic interferace or perhaps the cable is bad such as purposed by previuos posts, i duobt however that the operating system has anything to do with it, it could also be the video card its self, do you have another pc or laptop that you could try the monitor with? if so plug the monitor in to another pc and see if the problem remains, hope this helps

Okay, okay i lied I used this forum cause i think its more widely read than the hardware forums. I had figured right off the bat its not a software issue, I have yet to try and replace the cable. I got the monitor (19" HP) from a computer show for $50, guess i got my money's worth, lol....

Until i get a new cable does anybody else have other suggestions?
Srry if I mislead u all earlier

Maybe the refresh rate is set incorrectly. When in doubt, set it to auto refresh, if indeed your video card has that as an option.

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the problem. My video card/monitor does not support the auto refresh as well, but I tried various combinations of refresh rates and resolutions. I think the problem is related to the monitor echo as somebody else mentioned above. Is there any way to fix the echo? Thank you all for all your help.
