Comment:

I just upgraded from windows 98 to 2000 and my modem refuses to connect to AOL. It is a Conexant chipset modem and I checked their website and downloaded the Generic drivers for windows 2000(these drivers seem to be the only ones that work. Other drivers give errors in the device manager screen). Now America Online does a search for them modem after the setup and during this search, The system automatically restarts. I also tried to connect to an earthlink account using dial-up networking but as soon as the modem initilizes, the system restarts. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? your help is greatly appreciated.

Go to control pannel, double click on modem and query the modem to make sure it's working properly
