I install Win2K on my laptop just fine. I then plug in my 3com modem and it works just fine. Then I plug in my 3com NIC and it works just fine, BUT now my modem always says "No Dialtone." The only way for me to get rid of this message is to uninstall the NIC card. (Configuring hardware profiles does NOT help!) This has happened to me on multiple machines. What is going on? I though Win2K was supposed to eradicate problems like this. When I looked at another newsgroup the best suggestion was a third-party utility for switching between "locations" that one can set up. I can't believe I need a third-party ut for an OS that was "designed for the Internet." Please, even if you do not know how to fix this, let me know if you have also run into this error as I feel really dumb not being able to run a modem and a NIC under Win2K when it is perfectly easy under NT 4. HELP!!!! mesa thanks, jjb

This is one reason not to upgrade to Win2K.

Try looking in your connection settings, and disable "wait for dial tone". That will get you past that problem, but you will probably get connection difficulties next.
