It's very slow to open Microsoft windows network through my network places. This is a standard install of windows server 2000 with all of the windows updates installed. The server is set up on a workgroup. Does anyone know why its so slow to open my network places. On the client machines which are windows 2000 pro it opens instantly.

improper dns configuration is the usual reason. Odds are you didn't install dns on this server and this server is pointed to the ISP's dns servers which have no knowledge of your P2P network. The server has to revert to broadcasts to get a list of workgroup pcs to list. It has to exhaust the other name resolution methods before it gets to broadcasts which is what takes the time.
