Until recently I could click on my Windows
update and everything would chug through with no problems. Now all I get is the following message. Can anyone help .
"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site

System only.

This message has been displayed on updates for other older OS's. Later it was found working again. I would try again later - seems like they are having some glitches.

Thanks people. I've tried your suggestion OtheHill and my I have an "Error Starting Program" mesage "The SP4EXPRESS_EN[1].exe file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:strstr.

Have also tried several times to go my old route DerekW and the result is still as original message. Any further advice greatfully accepted.

Try the custom update option, if there is one. Maybe you have an old version of the installer and THAT needs to update.

Use the link below to update. The first screen has TWO buttons, Express and custom. Use the custom button and review the listed offerings BEFORE installing. Look for a listing for an installer. If it is listed, install only that file and reboot. Then go back and try getting the rest. I never use the express button.

What service pack do you have installed? Are you networked to any Macs?

I'm running XP now, but if I remember correctly the directions I gave about take you to the General tab, which has all the info right there.

Good Luck,

(EDIT: I think I gave that same link OtheHill. Just seeing how this new toy (edit) works is all, ok. Later guys and gals... Also forgot to say, as Derek said it could be problems, updates of MS sites also. If that is being done, going on, you will be redirected through scripting to that, ok. To test as I just said with out reading the js. When it happens turn scripting of in the Security section of your browser (IE). It will go to the right site, but then it will say about scripting. Never mind all the ranting... later ;-)

Again, right click on the "My computer icon, then click properties. On that screen you will see a row of tabs across the top. Click on the General tab. All the information is right there on that screen. If you are running Win2000 updated to atleast SP2 then you can download the "MS Windows Installer 3.1" at the link provided below. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

Thanks again OtheHill, stay with me.
All that appears is "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. 4.10.2222A" (No mention of a service pack.)But I could have sworn I was updated to Windows 2000 Premium well over two years ago.
Is there another sure way to find out before I start downloading.

It appears you are using Win98SE. If you THINK you also have Win2000 installed it may be on a different partition. When you double click My computer, post all the drives that are listed there and what type they are.

OK, double click C: & D: in turn to see a list of programs on each drive. You are looking for the word Windows or Winnt. Post what you find. Also back at the drive screen post what the capacity shows for C & D. Lastly, look for a file called boot.ini on the C: drive. If found, post what it says.

Ok. I've got Windows.001 in C drive.
C drive has 2.97 GB Capacity (2.16 GB used)
D drive has 31.4 GB Capacity (4.3 GB used)
No Boot.ini file in C drive. Only file looking anthing like it is bootcln.sch preceded by a dollar sign.

I don't think you have Win2000 installed at all. It appears at some time you re-installed Win98 on the C: drive. You may already have all the updates that are available for Win98SE.

Windows 98 does still work on the windows update site, but you will have to try again a few days after getting that message. I to got that message and I was upset as I reloaded a 98 machine..... I tried again a few days latter and it worked... It's Micro$oft's servers... just shows how reliable it is.

'Computer pro' or not - - how can a person be unaware that they are running Windows 98?

I mean... seriously - there's a honkin' big Windows 98 logo upon starting - and various other 'clues' as well

{this one's made my 'noteworthy posts' list, for future publication - - heh - - }

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

Amazing how this post drifted into the 20's when the fact that MS update website was rickety got mentioned three times, and reference to others receiving the very same error message was made as early as #2.

Oh well, it's been fun I guess - I wonder what happened tho....
