When I go to Microsoft Update to check for updates, it asks me if I want to do Express or Custom. I choose custom. Then it goes through the scrolling green bar (Checking for updates) for over an hour before it finally shows me the available updates, even if there is none. When I had Windows Me installed on this computer, it did the scrolling green bar for only a couple of seconds.
I have a high-speed internet connection, so why the heck does take over an hour just to check for updates? Thanks in advance!

Found the problem, it was AVG. I uninstalled it, and I got through the green scrolling bar in less than 5 minutes.
When I installed AVG on my Windows XP computer, I found that it used over 50 MB of RAM, so I uninstalled it and installed Avast.
I just found that besides the slow Microsoft update, this computer was going very slow. I found that AVG was using over 80 MB of RAM, and the CPU usage was always 100%.
This is to anyone who is reading this-don't use AVG antivirus! Avast and Norton all the way!

No antivirus is probably better than AVG. When I installed Avast on my XP computer, it detected a trojan horse that I had for weeks that AVG never found.
I complained to AVG about that one.

Thanks! lol
When I uninstalled AVG, I told them it used ungodly amounts of RAM, it wouldn't update half of the time and it sent an error message every 30 seconds about it, and about the trojan. I told them I have been a loyal AVG customer for years (which I have) and that I am disapointed in what it has become.
Good thing I never spent any money in the full AVG package... lol

You only have 128MB RAM...do you expect your system to be fast? How many OS's have you tried now...95, 98, ME, 2K, Linux?
WinME or Win98 modded with 98lite is THE best option!

It's certainly faster with Avast than with AVG.
OS's I have tried on this computer:
Windows 2.03
Windows 3.0 (Real Mode)
Windows 3.1 (386 Enhanced Mode)
Windows 3.11 (386 Enhanced Mode)
Windows 95A (Safe Mode, due to too fast processor)
Windows 98SE
Windows ME
Windows 2000 Pro
Windows NT Workstation 4.0
MS-DOS (Obviously)
SimplyMEPIS 3.4
Damn SmallOS's i'm hoping to try:
Windows NT 3.51
MepisLite
XubuntuOS's I may try someday (for test purposes):
PC-DOS
FreeDOS
DR-DOS (Which I refer to as "Doctor DOS", since it's easier than "Digital Research DOS" lol!)
Windows 98Lite
Windows 2000Lite
Windows XPCompaq Presario 5365

For test purposes? You've already tried a 12 OS's & have 9 other possibilities listed...I'd say they were all for test purposes. I've gotta hand it to you though, you sure are stubborn.

If your talking about 98Lite or any other lite, has it ever occured to you that I may just not be interested?

For "OS's i'm hoping to try, that means that if it worked out pretty good, I may keep it.
As for "OS's I may try..." even if it did work, I may not keep it that way.
I don't really believe in programs that modify Windows, such as a free program I recently read about that makes Windows 98 look like Windows XP, which is why i'm not interested in litepc.
Besides, I finally got Windows 2000 working the way I like it, so i'm not gonna try any more OS's for a while.

You obviously haven't paid any attention to anything I've written. You probably never even checked out the 98lite website. It isn't some dumba$$ program that tries to transform 98 into something it's not. It's a program that allows you trim the fat & overhead from 98, allowing it to run strong & extremely fast. All it basically does it allow you to remove components/features that are installed by default, but M$ in it's infinite wisdom didn't provide a way to uninstall. The biggest being IE. Take all the web integration out of 98 or ME & the difference is like day & night. But I guess you'll never know....

I have read through the entire website. I know what it does
As of now, nope, i'll never know.
Like i've said, i'll try it someday. I'm not interested as of today, and I may not be tommorow, the day after, or 'till 2009.
If I were you, Jam, I would drop the subject, now...
