reboot and check the cd drive in device manager. What does it say?

How about the event viewer in start / programs / administrative tools? there are 3 error logs that catch stuff like that.

It doesn't say anything for the CD drive. It says that it works properly.
In the event viewer there are some warnings regarding the network card and IP adresses and two errors: DCOM and ntfs(it says i should run checkdisk)

I was wondering if somenthing may be wrong with RAM?

dear fellow, did you check your hard disc? sometimes qhen you have problems with your drive, it makes a lot of retries to get the information and if it doesnŽn get it it goes to a memory dump, another thing you can check is your last update operating system (service pack) maybe it is too old of course if oyu have a win-nt or win2k operating system.

good luck
best regards

If you are on Windows 2000, here is something that you can try. R click on My Computer go to properties. Under the Advanced tab, click on the performance options button. In the performance options screen, click on the change button. You should get a Virtual Memmory screen. Make the "initial size" be about the size of your RAM, then make the "maximum size" be about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 times the size of your RAM.

Forgot to mention, after you make the change in those numbers, you need to click on the set button.

lets see:
ntfs is your file system
DCOM is a distributed component manager
Device manager says the CD rom drives are ok

Is your CDRW drive sharing an interrupt with your NIC?

Has this combination of components ever worked together? if so what happened just before the problem started?

All these components used to work OK, but then I got this nasty virus and I had to format my disk. Then my computer was freezing constanly and I ran Memtest86 to see if RAM may be the problem. This was when I first experienced my problem

Ooooooohhhhhhh.

OK. lets get serious. a re-format didn't solve the problem. the next line of defence is to "Nuke & Pave". That's when you force a low level test of your hard disk by deleting all partitions with FDisk and creating a new one. Choose NTFS over FAT32 if it isn't already that way.

This is followed by a normal format and fresh installation of W2K. You might as well refresh all your device drivers.
