Hi, my aunties friend has windows 2000 pro.
Recently when she has tried to start her computer she gets the typical blue creen when windows tries to boot. Here is the error message, "STOP c0000218:{REGISTRY FILE FAILURE}The registry cannot load the hive {file}:\SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software or it's log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writtable.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow the steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows 2000 updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove ant newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory option such as cache or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer press F8 to select Adanced Start Up Options, and then select Safe Mode."

Does any one know what could be causing this. I have advised to see if the computer is still bootable in safe mode and yes it is. I was suggesting she might have to go into start up and recovery and and not use any memory dump, deselect under failure options. I want to know if there is anything i am missing here since the error message reffered to "Registry".

Your assustance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked the ram to make sure it is seated in its slot? Can the friend afford getting some more ram? It is fairly cheap and would be a good upgrade.

One other thing to try. 2000 does not have msconfig. Perhaps there are to many programs starting at startup. You can do either of the following to make sure only the necessary apps are starting like the firewall, antivirus etc. Either copy/download msconfig.exe from http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html

or get startup control from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

thanks allot for the reply however i did end up solving the problem. (it helps when i am able to be physically in front of the computer).
Its funny how you mentioned about the start up programs because i ended up going into the registry and cleared up some unwanted programs that were apparently spyware. i also changed the memory dump size to 64KB and changed the setting with system failure. i also uninstalled her anti-virus which didnt look to good in the logs. When i rebooted, windows finally came on however i checked the hardware config and apparently the audio devices and network device was disabled so i enabled and reinstalled the drivers. Once i did that, all was ok. the only thing that i didnt have time for to check further into was the resolution settings. Its seems that windows has defaulted back to the vga settings and wont change. i tried going though adaptors to update but nothing would update at that time. since i was in a rush i advised my aunties friend to try and give it a few reboots as sometimes windows may able to detect plug and play disply settings and if it doesnt, she will have to open the case and look at the manufacturer name of the video card in order to apply the right drivers. If there is anything else that she is able to get back her normal desktop, please advise.

thanks heaps for the link capt and for your assistance.

You might try using the full performance scan at Pc Pitsop. It will tell her what vido card she has. Since she had spyware, I would recommend that she gets the Microsoft antispyware program, since it will work with 2000,as well as XP. Adaware, Spywareblaster and Spybot are the other good free antispyware program. The Microsoft spyware program automatically updates itself, is good at removing the crud, and is fairly decect at detecting the nasties. It is free too.
