Comment: Hi all, I have a problem mapping an ms-dos shared folder from win2k sp4. I try over tcpip and netbeui. Using conventional systems (net use/map network device) doesn't work. Looking for this problem on internet i found that's a problem of sp4, and seems that all works fine on sp3. For some reason i can't reinstall the OSes, but i need to map this shared folder... Someone has a solution? Thanks in advice ^^

Reply: (edit)msdos didn't have sharing so you can't map in dos. But perhaps you just aren't explaining yourself well. Maybe a few details are in order Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

Reply: (edit)Sorry Wanderer but if the poster is using MS Network Client 3 with the TCP/IP protocol, one can share directories/drives. In actual fact MS NWC3 has a very Share GUI. The posters problem is making those Shares on the MS-DOS PC available on W2K. The usuall means of sharing is to go into CMD.EXE and use the syntax
net use ................... This should work when connected to a PC running MS-DOS and NWC3. You are running NWC3 ??

Reply: (edit)I am taking the guy at face value plainandsimple. He said msdos. He didn't say MS client for Dos now did he? I know because I used to work with NT and WFW from their start. Made many a boot install disk made with Network Administrator. But that's why I asked for clarification. Not enough info to make a accurate assessment of what is going on. I didn't even see a ping test so how can you map a drive if you haven't covered the basics? Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

Reply: (edit)Thanks wanderer and plainandsimple ^^ Sorry for my english but is not my language... I try to give you a better explanation. I have a client with ms-dos 6.22 and Microsoft network client 3.0 that allow me to select microsoft tcp/ip or netbeui. in ms-dos i have a shared folder (I don't like gui, and I use the command 'net share'). In the other side of the cable, I have a windows 2000 pro sp4 with the same protocol, the right network configuration and user permission. I can map from dos a shared folder of win2k, but I can't do the same from win2k to a shared folder of dos. If I try (from win2k) with 'net use' command the result is 'system error 58 - The specified server cannot perform the requested operation'. A similar error if I try to map using "Map Network Device..." (from 'my network place'). Using Win98 or Xp i can map an msdos shared folder... but i can't change operative system.

Reply: (edit)Have you installed both Client and Server of MS Network Client 3, and you only need TCP/IP protocol. http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dosclien.htm http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dosclien.htm Under MS-DOS6.xx NWC3 has high memory usage.

Reply: (edit)The tcp/ip protocol is installed and configured, i can map a shared folder of win2k from msdos (I assume that network configuration and hardware is ok), but i can't do the opposite. Using net share i can check that msdos folder is shared. With net view i can check that win2k can see msdos machine, but i can't browse it (same problem than xp). Mapping directly the shared folder i have the error message that i have already posted (this don't happen in xp that still ok - but i can't reinstall the os of the win2k machine). sigh
