Hay people, i am new here so i havent really contributed. Still i have a major problem and u guys seem well into this stuff, so maybe you could help me out?

Anyway, i recently (i know i waited to long) got win 2k, and ive been trying to get this program working called Daemon Tools. Very useful program use it heaps with backing up cds and iso's etc. It worked well on win 98 but i cant install it on 2k, because.. my windows installer is screwed.

Heres a description of what happens.
launch setup.exe

Windows Installer: Preparing to install...
*Long wait nothing happens*
*Hit cancel*
*Long wait*
Windows Installer: The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode (which i am not!), or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personal for assistance.

Ok well thats pretty much it. I cant use it. I was told to download a later version, but it says i cant install it because "the specific service already exists". I was then told to upgrade to service pack 3, which i did (express setup) and all that did was slow down my startup (still got the first error). So i believe im out of options other than asking for help here.

What can i do? Ive already sat in the corner and cried...

Thanks in advance - Will.

well, I'm not sure this is a Windows Installer Problem (while on the surface it appears to be)

Can you install ANY programs at all ? (other than this daemon tools) such as Winzip or Office 2000/XP or Adobe Acrobat reader, etc.

Have you confirmed from the publisher/manufacturer of this Daemon Tools that the version you have is 100% windows 2000 certified.

Start with the simple possiable causes, eliminate those then move on to the complicated ones.

If you can install all windows 2000 certified apps EXCEPT this one, the logic would tend to say this Daemon Tools is not 2000 supported. Just an idea, not necessarily the Solution.. Good Luck

Well thanks, but im quite sure although not 100% that it is the installer. There are other ways to install things on 2k, they all seem to work except for this one. Ive even tried using it through controlpanelcomputermanagementservicesand applications windows installer --- and no it doesnt work there. Basically any program i use which installs with the windows installer wont work.

Thanks for the idea tho, and sorry for providing the problems with no solutions.

Let's put this another way.

If you try to install that Daemon Tools on ANY windows 2000 based PC and the installer fails on Every 2000 PC you've tried (I presume you've tried more than just this ONE PC) then it's saying that the MS Installer on every windows 2000 PC is messed up.

That doesn't sound to good. I know you didn't say it does it on every PC, I;m saying try to install it on other 2000 PC and see what happens.

If it's the same result on every 2000 server, it's not the Server that's the problem - it's the program...

Ok,

we'll go with the premise that the windows Installer is broken or failing in some way.

There is a Microsoft Windows Installer Redistrable install. Goto

Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4B6140F9-2D36-4977-8FA1-6F8A0F5DCA8F

Download the file for NT 4 or 2000 English. This would be about all that I can think of. Either it's an APP issue or this reinstall of Windows Installer well resolve the windows installer issues.

Good Luck

Hey everyone.

I have a very similar problem that I can't get resolved. I am trying to install a totatlly differant application but getting the same Windows Installer errors. MSI file extension are not even registered as Windows Installer files.

If someone comes up with a resolution could you please email me at megaman@mtco.com.

Thanks,
Matt

meggena, did you download and install the Microsoft Windows Installer from the link

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4B6140F9-2D36-4977-8FA1-6F8A0F5DCA8F

You have to determine if it's the app or MS Installer. If this app fails on every windows 2000 PC you attempted, then I would say it's the app.

Especially is the reinstall of MS Installer doesn't accomplish anything.

I have installed this application on almost 50 other computers. I know it works. This particular PC will not let me install any type of programs now. I tried installing the Windows Installer from the link above but it says "The specified service already exists." Any clue what would cause this?
