Major Virtual Memory Problems!

Hi,

Upon booting into win2k, I get a Limited virtual memory (VM) window. It says your computer has no paging file, or it's too small. To fix, go to "performance options"
and set to a larger page size.

This problem occurred on BOTH of my win2k computers after I used "my network places" to link them to each other remotely. The problem resulted STRICTLY after I tried
to access my Eudora remotely (ie. I run eudora on my office box and I wanted to test if I could open Eudora (with remote mailboxes) on
my home system. This of course led to many problems, the first being a 3-button popup window that said
that a remote instance may be running and running two at the same time could lead to data corruption;
You can choose to: 1 exit this instance, 2 terminate remote instance, or 3 continue and suffer the consequences.
Later I couldn't even open Eudora in my office (it would give me that 3-button window and refuse to
open regardless of which of the 3 buttons I chose) so I reinstalled Eudora and everything seems to be
okay again. I think this would suggest that the VM problem happened not because of the networking but
because of remotely accessing Eudora? By the way, computer 1 has one hard drive 4.77 GB free hard drive space and 128 MB RAM and computer 2 has one hard drive
with upwards of 10 GB free and 192 MB RAM.

How do I fix this VM problem? I tried what the Limited VM window suggested. Ie. I went to performance
options (where optimize performance for applications is checked and VM total paging file size for all
drives is 20 MB!). I set the paging file size to a larger initial (1536 MB) and maximum (3072 MB) size
than before (leaving the max registry size alone). However, upon rebooting, I still get the Limited
VM window as mentioned at the top.

I've tried a lot of things over the last month and none of them worked.

First suggestion that didn't work:
>Look it up, i think it's you're problem...
>http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q257/7/58.ASP?LN=EN->US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=no%20paging%20file&rnk=7&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WIN2000

i followed the steps exactly and it didn't fix the problem. my computer still
boots with a paging file error. it sets the page file size to 20 MB. where else can
i post this question besides here? is there a forum on microsoft's page or one
geared toward win2k?

Second suggestion that didn't work:
>It could be that your pagefile.sys got corrupted during the Eudora fiasco. Set it to 0 values for initial
>and maximum. Restart your computer. It will take forever to boot and will give you the error, of course.
>Then, change the settings for VM again. This time to 2-3 times the RAM. But, set both initial and maximum
>sizes to be the same. Make sure you press the SET button, before pressing OK.
>
>The above should 'reset' the pagefile, recreate it, and not change it again, thereby slightly improving
>performance of your computer.

i THOUGHT it would work as when i tried setting it to 576 and 576 (after setting it to 0
first), it actually popped up
a new window saying do you want to overwrite pagefile.sys - so i clicked yes.
then, i rebooted and it still popped up the same error and when i went to performance
options it still is set to 20 MB.

I tried setting it to 2 MB, rebooting, and then setting
it to 576 and rebooting. It still popped up the same error and when i went to
performance options it still is set to 20 MB.

There must be a solution that deviates from the general strategy...

thanks and i greatly appreciate any and all suggestions.

Try this: Go to C_DRIVE Properties, Security tab, ensure there is a name Everyone with at least "List Folder Contents" permission. Reboot the machine.
