A machine account is so that the server knows that computer is allowed in the domain.
A user account lets the domain know that that user is allowed access to things.

Roughly it's exactly what they're named. There is an account for the computer and an account for the user so everything is a known thing and can be assigned rights and permissions.

Hope that's not too fuzzy, low on cafeeine still....
