A few days ago my os crashed. I thought first it was the HD, but I was able to continue using the pc. All my files in the document folder, my favorite and the desktop were GONE. I reinstalled the internet connection put up a new shortcuts and worked on some files and saved them to the desktop. I then turned off the pc. The next day when I wanted to continue working on the files, they and everything I had done was gone. I checked the command prompt and the only prompt that I got was c:\\documents and settings\TEMP. I could not get the c prompt. Since then I have limited myself to email and some internet searches and saved the few things I did to a thumb drive. I avoided restoring things by hibernating the pc. Last night I shut it down in order to clean out the ram and when I turned it on this morning I did not have to re-establish the internet connection and when I checked the prompt it gave me the administrator folder. I still cannot see any of my files on the c drive.
I have bought a new HD that I will put in, and would like someone to tell me what happend to my computer and what can I do in order to get all my files back.

Run a CHKDSK /f on your drive.

Convert any lost chains to files.

You can do it either way...from Windows or the command prompt.

You will be prompted to have it run at next system startup, just say yes or ok to this.

Login as Administrator, rename your profile folder to userid.old and login again with that same ID. You can then take ownership of the files in the old profile and move the documents to somewhere OTHER than the Documents and Settings\userid folder. Buying a new HDD wasn't necessary, but you can use it to store your data once you get it connected and formatted properly.

I ran chkdsk without any problems, but files are still lost.
Is there anything else I can do?

Check your hard drive.
See the latter part of response 1 in this:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/...

If the drive passes...

Try system file checker.
Place your Windows CD in a drive.
Start - Run - type: cmd (click OK)
expand the window
type: sfc /scannow (press Enter)
(note the space after scannow)
Oops - (note the space after sfc)

That will check your system and replace missing and corrupted system files that are found on the Windows CD.
