Look In when opening or saving hangs pc

Problem:
When I Open or Save As, I get the Look In dialog box with the drop down menu. As soon as I hit the drop down menu my system freezes for up to five minutes. If I wait long enough the machine will eventually become responsive and I can browse the Look In feature no problem. If I close the app and do it again, it hangs again. This happens in both OS and installed programs. Every other aspect of the computer works fine. If anyone knows the fix for this problem please let me know. Re-installng the OS is not an option.
