Comment:

When bootup completes the mouse arrow points south-easterly instead of the typical north-westerly direction and The Windows 2000 logo is upside down. Bootup in safe mode and everything comes up straight. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? No viruses are involved as a full scan was already run.

To stop it happening again right-click on an empty area on the desktop, click on 'properties' then on the 'settings' tab followed by the 'Advanced' button. On here there is a tab relating to graphics, mine says 'Intel(R) Extreme Graphics' click on the tab then on the 'Graphics properties' button, choose the 'rotation' tab and remove the tick from the 'Enable Rotation' - remember to click 'apply'. Hope this helps

capt...thanks for the tip. I was in the properties area already but didn't go as far as you're suggesting. I'll post back when I'm done.

DAMU...thanks for your tip too! If capt's tip doesn't resolve it I'll apply your fix.

Jen...entertaining comments are always welcome. I already have the monitor on it's head so I could navigate around for the time being. In all my service calls I have honestly never seen this before. There's a first for everythiong I suppose.

So far only flipping the monitor on its head (not a real or long term fix) has worked. Nothing in the BIOS seemed like an appropriate adjustment and only logging in with F8-safe mode provides a right-side-up view. Has anybody had this happen to them on either a Dell or other vendor with Win2k-SP4?

Do you have msconfig for xp installed, or Mike Linn's msconfig cleanup v 1.2 installed? If not I would install the one you like best, and then check to see if any strange startup item is listed, since it works properly in the safe mode. It could be a malware program or other virus/worm problem that your antivirus missed. Have you ran any on line scans like housecall from Trend Micro or Panda's to get a second opinion?

The only steps taken so far were to reinstall the Sophos AV client which is in use network wide and ran a complete drive scan. I suspected a virus or worm of some sort after checking all graphics settings but have never heard of this as a result of an infection. Nobody believed me until they saw it for themselves.

capt was correct with only a slight difference in the path provided. Many Dell models use MOBO based Intel Chipsets for their graphics which control the various display settings. Some clown probably made the change and walked away.

Thanks to all for their input.

I usually post the results of my efforts, especially when a reply is helpful in resolving my inquiry. I get plenty of excellent tips from reading through historical posts from other members so I believe it only fair to share my jointly achieved successes.

Thanks to all for the tips. This happened to me inadvertently. In my case responses #1, and #2 were applicable. I had knocked into the keyboard, and must have struck Ctrl+Alt+down arrow without realizing or having been aware of the effect. Once I read this I was able to easily correct the rotation with Ctrl+Alt+up arrow, and confirm the "enable rotation" check box had been checked.
