I'm trying to extract a cd-key that I don't have anymore off a hard drive that now appears to have a problem with the MBR. I can still see the files on the HD via a boot disk, and I think I remember it's possible to edit the registry with a boot disk from A+ training, however user and system .dat only appear to be the registry files for 9x.

Any explinations as to what the name of the registry file(s) is and where it would be located would be an immense help to my day.

Update: We got the HD hooked up to another computer as slave and can see and edit the files at will. All we need is the name of and location of the registry.

There are several files that make up the registry but they can be located in the %systemroot%\system32\config folder.

You'll see the files in there, SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SECURITY, etc.

Good luck.

Look in the System32 folder, and one of the files nearest the top is $winnt$.inf. Open this in notepad, and you'll see the CD key in there.
