Subject: LCD Does Not Turn Off When Closed |
Comment: Hi, My Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop LCD does not turn off when I close the lid; it does nothing. I know the machine recognizes that it is closed, because when I reopen it the screen flickers, but when it's closed I can see light still coming out from under it. The Device Manager calls it "Default Monitor"; shouldn't it be called something like "Laptop Display"? There doesn't seem to be any way to change the hardware because it is automatically detected. This is just a Win2K problem; it turns off fine under WinME. I can't seem to find a setting for it in any control panels. Dual monitor (TwinView) is disabled. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Patrick

Reply: (edit)THis is very important, follow this advise to the letter. Go to the nearest store that sells boxes designed for shipping computers. Then buy 2 of them and package that laptop up using good quality foam filler, one box inside of the other. Then mail it to me. I'll use if for a few months maybe 6, then I'll return it to you. :):) This should take care of your problem for atleast 6 months anyway. ~~~~~ sorry, but I've been up for 2 days and I'm getting a little goofy ~~~~~~

Reply: (edit)Just a long shot - You have gone into power options/advanced and made the choice there to turn off when you close the lid? Perhaps you had done than in '98 but forgot in WIN2K. Also when my notebook remains plugged in it is recharging the battery and there is a little light that shines that you can see even when closed.

Reply: (edit)FJ, I know it's not a big problem, I just like to conserve battery power by turning off the screen manually :) Anyway, I won't sweat it if I can't find a solution. MaryB, I tried looking through the power properties but the settings for closing the lid are only standby, poweroff, and none. The light is clearly coming from the screen. Again, it's no big deal, thanks for the advice anyway!
