Subject: Laptop locked: can't get into safe
OS: 2000 pro sp 4
CPU/Ram: 128
Model/Manufacturer: IBM Thinkpad
Comment:

Thinkpad running Win 2000 pro sp 4 went haywire Sunday. I am getting the following message and it reboots every 60 sec.

The system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

The system process C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SERVICES.EXE terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. The system will shut down and restart.

Can't access Safe Mode or anything due to shutdown problem. Always goes back to the same message. Have accessed the MS site for help, but to no avail. Nothing was installed and one problem Microsoft list is Bear Share - it is NOT on my system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This system is running on XP and no floppy drive, so really need to access the laptop via cd rom if needed.

Thanks in Advance
Lyn

are two hits from a google trawl using:

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SERVICES.EXE terminated unexpectedly with status code 128.

as the search term/string...

Notwithstanding that say you can't get into safe-mode (how are you going about attempting that aspect?) most solutions appear to involve safe-mode...?

Perhaps if the above don't help resolve it you do a similar trawl and check some of the other responses/hits?

I used the F8 command to get to safe mode, but will not allow me into safe mode or anything else to attempt that fix. System reboots every 60 sec.

Everything I have found re problem involves getting into safe mode and the registry. Have not tried to reformat as this is an option of last resorts.
Thanks
Lyn

If critical/immediate concern is to access/recover data, post back - before going the rather drastic path of reformatting etc.; there are other options you might consider/pursue first...

Sounds like the blaster and/or sasser worm.

You should be able to install the two Microsoft patches before the shutdown.

Just like to point out this is the Windows2000 board not the XP board. You probably thought oh XP was made in the 2000's but there is a board for it. Do you remember what you were ding when you last used it before it began shutting down as that will help if you have to manually remove the files.

The system in ? is running 2000 pro. Went to go online when the message came up. System runs all the time, clicked on email and message came up and shut down. No emails were opened, just the outlook shortcut.

I burned the sasser fix to cd as this system has no floppy drive. Unable to access cd drive in the IBM laptop as it continues to shut down before you can get into safe mode, dos or anything else. Tried to cold boot the cd and still nothing except shutdown.

try tapping the escape key on reboot and try getting into safe mode that way. I've used that on various laptops, keep trying, as it has to be tapped at just the right time. You should eventually get into safe mode.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I have tried tapping esc key, still reboots, have attempted all options after hitting F8 to no avail.

Sorry if I confused some, my desktop is XP with no floppy drive and the laptop is running win 2000 pro sp4. Need some files on the laptop if possible, but still can't get into registry, safe mode etc.

Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Lyn

Problem Fixed...thanks all. Ended up going into BIOS on startup and setting to start from cd. Reinstalled Win 2000 Pro, so what ever the problem was it is fixed now with the exception of the 36 updates to be downloaded again...thank goodness for broadband.

Thanks again,
Lyn
