I HAVE A DELL CPI USED LAPTOP THAT COMES WITH AN EXTERNAL CD ROM. THE SYSTEM RECOGNIZES An a) floppy disk and a b)floppy disk drive but when you go to device manager, there is no CD Rom icon. I have tried to use the hardware wizard to detect the cd rom to no avail. Do I need the driver installed? I have no installation disks and cannot find the driver (DELL lbl p/n 5044D A02 FOR WINDOWS 2000) on the web).
Is the external CD Drive - USB, Parallel, PC Card - you did not state, also would it happen to have a manufacturers name/model ??

If it is a drive specifically for that machine (i.e. it uses a specific socket just for that device rather than a standard USB etc) then you will need the drivers for the port to be recognised. I'm sure if you look hard enough they will be on the net somewhere, otherwise try contacting Dell, they may have an archive.
