OS: Win 2000 pro
CPU/Ram: 128
Comment:

The computer continuously restarts or never reaches the operating system desktop or start menu:

Sony Vaio Laptop keeps restarting continuously and never gets to the desktop

When i turn it on, it show the Sony logo then the loading bar, Then the win 2000 pro starting windows…then it goes into a blue screen for 1 sec and I can’t read the error message.

Tried to go into safe mode to disable auto restart but that also keeps restarting repeatedly, in safe mode too.

Some of the words on the blue screen are:

Not writable
Dump
Support group
Software
Beginning dump of physical memory

Laptop Sony Vaio pcg-xg29
Win 2000 professional

Its been working fine up until now and have not installed any 3rd party hardware.

Thanks!

Looks like a corrupt registry. Have you used any regclean utils?
My favourite Win 2k recovery, is to boot from installation CD; First off, the cd will ask whether to set-up or repair. At this point choose set-up. Next accept license agreement (f8); Then when set-up finds existing version of Win 2k ask it then to repair.
Once set-up has completed, drivers re-loaded etc. (if necessary) Re-install service pak 4 and bob's yer mother's brother.

This method will not wipe your drive. Mainly what this does ir return your OS to a working state. If for any reason the repair fails, then you can do a 'parallel install' of Win 2k to preserve the user data on your drive.
Try the repair first.

k, I booted from the cd. it went to a window that said set up or repair, i selected set up, hit the F8 key to accept the agreement, then it took me to the next screen that reads:
The following list shows the existing partitions space on this computer.

The only option it gives me is:

1. set up windows 2000 on the selected item press enter.

2. To create a partition in the unpartitioned space.

the repair thing was on the pervious window, should i go back to that and hit repair from there?

Thanks!

Looks like the cd skipped a step. The screen you should see following the licence agreement is normally something like:
To repair the selected w2k installation press R
To continue installing fresh copy of w2k without repair press esc.
Reboot and try again....

No probelm...

Press R –

Then it brought me to this screen:
You need an Emergency Repair disk for the Windows 2000 installation you want to repair.
NOTE: Setup can only repair windows 2000 Installations.

1. If you have the Emergency Repair disk, Press Enter

2. If you do not have the Emergency Repair disk, Press L
Set up will attempt to locate the windows 2000 for you.

I hit L because I don’t have a repair disk and then it brought me to this screen

Now is says, “Setup cannot find a windows 2000 installation to repair.
Unless you provide the Emergency Repair Disk, or if you want Set to search for existing Windows 2000 Installation again, press enter>
2. If you want to quit Setup, press F3

I hit the enter button and got the same message as above.

Thanks!

Don't like the look of that. Looks like Sony have used a custom Windows 2000 version. Hit F3 to exit, then reboot. Looks like a parallel installation is the only alternative. When u reach the screen following the licence agreement, press esc to continue installing fresh copy of w2k without repair.
Next you get 3 (or maybe 4) choices. The one you want is 'To setup W2k on selected item press enter.'
Next screen again has multiple choices. Choose To continue setup...... Press C
Next screen Select 'Leave file system intact' choice.
Next screen only 2 choices I think. Select 'To use different folder.. press esc.'
Change install folder to winnt.000 (or whatever you think)

Doing it this way means you will have to re-install apps, but at least you will be able to back-up personal files.

Sorry it's been such a pain!

Should I try "Last Known Good Configuration" Most likely that won’t work...do you think I need to backup the hard drive and format with a clean install?

No sure how to backup the hard drive, I thought I could just take it out the hard drive and plug the ribbon into another computer, but it looks like a smaller ribbon.

Thanks!

k, the window i'm at now is to set up windows on the selected Item, Press Enter.
Or to create a partition in the un partition space, press C

the 2 choices are
C: Fat34 12159 MB (8526 MB Free
D: Fat32 5138 MB (5127 MB Free

i hit enter to set up on C:

Then the next screen says, "you choose to install windows on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing windows 2000 on this partition might cause the other operating system to function improperly.

> To continue Setup using this partition, Press C

> To select a different partition, press ESC.

Should i go for the press C?

Will this wipe out my outlook emails, or will be all there and just need to reinstall the outlook program?

Thanks!

Use either partition, (but best to use C) as long as you don't overwrite the original winnt folder.
When you re-install Outlook, to get your mail messages back, search for a .pst file. Import this file to recover mail.

Wow! I think we are on to something

"Change install folder to winnt.000 (or whatever you think) "

i'm at this screen now; it says set up needs to copy the windows 2000 files onto your hard drive disk.
Select the folder in which the files should be copied:

\winnt

not sure what to do here,

do i just call it any name under this directory or take out the WINNT and call it something else or do it like your example:

\WINNT\0000 or \WINNT.0000 or \My documents\OS

or

Take out the WINNT and call it something else (anything) or does it have to be a folder with in the current OS?

just adding the "0000" after the WINNT wont delete anything?

Thanks for the help!

Call it anything except winnt. You want to preserve the contents of this folder in case any app has stored user files/settings there.
