What exactly are Regedit files and what do thy do? I removed BDE files as per post 22281 in win ME, they were all there except for C:\Windows system bde secure install.cab
install.exe
bdeverify.dll
bdeverify.exe
Are these on another path in win 2000?
Also I noticed there are lots of files in Regedit left over from previously uninstalled programs eg Autocad removed 3 weeks ago, and there was 20 or so left in Regidit, I deleted them. Other files left over from uninstalled Gozilla as well.
Is it safe to remove these files, they can't be copied in case of replacement if needed.
Some files are doubled up, can the doubles be removed? How do we know which are safe to remove? The reason Iam asking is because when I removed files out of ##### current version\Run my system boots up faster and runs better.
Lots of Questions, looking forward to some informed replies. Thanx Stan.

Stan, you must be very careful when deleting items from the Registry. Bascially, it's a database of entries for everything on your machine. If a particular registry entry is gone, the computer doesn't know it's there.

Deleting the files from Run entry just prevents those program from executing when the computer starts up. That would explain why your system appears to be running faster, as not everything that WAS running is CURRENTLY running.

The AutoCad entries should be removed by looking for AutoDesk first, and deleting those references in the Registry.

Again, I stress, BE VERY CAREFUL with what you delete in the Registry. Just to be sure, back up the Registry before you make changes. You can do this buy following this procedure:

Run Regedit
Click Registry
Export

Give it a descriptive name, and it will be a .reg file.

Thanx Jennifer, yes you are right, I lost the quick launch icons in the task bar for the programs involved, not a major disaster but enough to know to be carefull. However on a positive note my KazaaLITE is funtioning very well without all the BDE crap so if you want Kazaa without the spyware it's the way to go.
Thanx Stan.
