Are you running AD?
The machine may already be a client in the directory.

Yes AD is running, but the win 2000 client is a new PC thats never been installed on the NT server. I also tried adding the win 2000's machine name but i still get the error message.

I'm confused. You said you have AD running so you have a W2k domain. You also say you have an NT4 domain. Is the NT server trying to join the NT domain or the W2k domain. Or, is the w2k client trying to join a domain. Can you clarify?

Is the NT4 server the DNS server? I would set a static IP address and a default gateway pointing to the server.Ping the server to make sure it can communicate and then when communications is established join the domain. If the W2K machine is not in the same subnet it wont find the server and hence cannot join.
