I have a Pentium II 450Mhz, with 64Mb Ram, I just installed Windows 2000 Professional, and now the computer, does not switch off automatically, in Windows 98, it would. The mother board is the type that shutdown automatically... therefore the only way to switch the computer off is from the switch at the back of the computer, as if I press the power on button, it goes into standby mode... can anyone please help me...

Suggestion
Make sure 'Shut Down' is selected in the
Shut Down Windows screen where it asks "what do you want the computer to do?"It is easy to miss.

I had this same problem for a while. I did a couple of things so I'm not sure what made it stop, but I did remove and reinstall my Nortons Antivirus I also installed the patch for my ZoneAlarm firewall. I also downloaded and ran Nortons SpeedDisk for NT. Running that fixed a bunch of small issues I had like no recycle bin, unstable video and some others.

i have the same problem. i've finally migrated to 2k but now find that my PC will not auto-powerdown like it did under 98.
my install is only 2 days old and it has never powered down automatically, even from a bare install.
this wouldn't be a problem, but my softboot power button requires to be held down for 10secs plus it will only restart the machine, requiring a 2nd 10 second push to power down as it is POSTing. as you can imagine, a little annoying. if anyone knows why this happens, please let me know.

You gotta search your Registry for an entry called PowerdownAfterShutdown and change the 0 to a 1 (or 1 to a 0 if that is the case).
I did that and all of a sudden my computer shut off the power when i did a shutdown.

Windows 2000 will not auto shut down the cpu, It work like Windows NTx, wher you have to switch the computer of manually. When you select Shutdown from the start button it does close all running applications and will display a message on screen saying "IT IS SAFE TO SWITCH OFF YOUR COMPUTER". This is normal for this OS it will not damage your computer.

Windows 2K will auto Shut down. I have had it doing so on my PC. Though this has now changed after the addition of some drivers and software. I dont know which ones yet.
My PC goes through all the motions saving settins etc. and even goes as far as turning the HDD off. But it will not power down any more and stops on the windows background colour with a frozen mouse cursor.
When I find the piece of errant software or driver that caused this it will post it though there are probably hundreds of drivers etc. that can cause this.
(I have tried the Win2K SP1 and Office 2KSP1 but they did not resolve it , they actually could have caused it.)
