See Q240362 at Microsoft. When the Ntds.dit file iss missing from one of the drive that 2000 is looking for at bootup on a AD server this is the error message. You will need to boot into safe mode using retore AD when prompted and restore this file in the location that it is missing. You will also need to know the password you set for restoring the AD on the computer.I lost this file off of a data drive when I reformatted it. I restores the System State from the backup and all was fine.
