I am a newbie in win2k server, so please excuse this question if it is too naive:

I have been entrusted with maintaining a Win2k server configured as Domain Controller, serving just 10 clients in a LAN (no WAN access). Trying to optimize the server, I found they have installed IIS while they are not using a registered domain name and never need to access the server remotely. Is it OK to uninstall IIS? I am afraid to do that for fear of disrupting their normal operations :\ so need your feedback.

IIS is Microsofts version of a web server. Yes, if you are not using it then remove it.

Since you are a newbie to Win2K server....I suggest you do uninstall IIS...You really need to have lots of time and studying the function and security behind IIS. Atleast 40hrs worth of IIS studying. With all the issues with Virus' and code reds, your server is open to the world if you don't know what you are doing. IIS operates by default on different open ports once booted and connected to the internet. IIS does include a WWW which allows you to host your own website, but with out proper eduaction on IIS, a malicious hacker can take control of your server, this inclused through the FTP server included in ISS. If you want to host a website just for the 10 clients you have on a local intranet, use a simple server like AnologX WWW which you can download for free from CNET.com
