Would it be a good move to install win2000 on my 13 year old daughters computer. She is on a home/office network and shares DSL internet. Occasionally viruses get into her computer (98SE). With instant messaging and downloading, I think her computer is the weak link in the network (XP and 98). I have Norton Anti virus on her system, one snuck by it yesterday.

any thoughts

thanx

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish by switching operating systems. Any computer that's capable of running XP should be able to handle W2K. If it's viruses that bother you, you might consider changing your AV software. I got fed up with Norton's inability to catch things and switched to Trend Micro's PC-cillin. Haven't had a problem since.(About 6 months now)

I'd stay with 98 for your daughter's computer. 2000 is definitely a more stable OS however, it isn't compatible with a lot of kids software. XP is more compatible and might be a better choice than 2000 but personally I don't like XP.

You didn't mention how you're sharing the DSL connection but if you're not already doing so, you should share it via a DSL router that has firewall capabilities. Also, get rid of the Norton AV, it's not very good. Personally, I've had more problems with Norton products than I have with any other product.

Well, not to be difficult but, while I agree with not swapping OS's unless you have to.......I do have to disagree with the comments on Norton's AV. I've been using Norton products for many years both at home and in the workplace and I've NEVER had any trouble installing it or using it. I've also yet to have any virus slip past it. Of course I update my antivirus files regularly (weekly to bi-weekly). I've found the problems most people have with Norton run right back to the person installing it...which might explain why I don't...I am a professional.

Thanks Everyone!

I did stick with 98SE for many reasons. One I know it well and she does. I never even gave it a thought about software compatibility---that definitely would have been problems.

I am behind a router that has a firewall.

As for Norton, I have always had good luck with it until yesterday. Yes, I do have automatic updates.

Anyways its back up and running and received a much needed cleaning out.

thanx
