Would appreciate any help anyone can provide on this.
Situation: Compaq EvoD510 workstation with MSWindows2kpro - with recent patches and Service Packs.
Workstation refuses to read CDs - drive is displayed in explorer, device manager reports no issues - is using standard cdrom.sys and redbook.sys drivers.
Discs can be read after drive is uninstalled, workstation rebooted and a CD is left in the drive prior to reboot.
Have checked HP/Compaq support forums for this issue.
I'm out of ideas - does anyone know anything about this?
Once again - appreciative of any help.
Many thanksJonathan

Your PC sounds new. If under warranty, contact the vendor. If you have a service contract they may replace/repair for free.
If you haven't already, try the hardware troubleshooter in Windows Help.
I Had a CD drive problem myself last month. Was a real bear to get any kind of resolution. Here's some things I tried:
Checked BIOS. Checked boot sequence, plug and play activation. I think F10 key at bootup will get you into the Compaq BIOS.
I looked into flashing the BIOS but in the end, didn't want to take the risk.
Checked cables to CD drive. Made sure they were plugged into the drive firmly. Also tried unplugging/replugging all cables to the device and even unplugging/replugging the motherboard end of the flat ribbon cable.
Uninstalled/reinstalled CD Writing software. Upgraded to latest version of CD software.
Tested the CD drive in another machine and ruled out that the drive was going bad.
Another option that I looked into but didn't follow through on was replacing the power supply. Was possible that the power lead to the CD drive was faulty.
