I have two parts to this problem. First of all, I'm trying to make a server be www.domainname.com. There is already a mail.domainname.com. I currently have the name of the computer as rjpserv4 and because of that I'm finding files on rjpserv4.domainname.com, but not on the www address. However, when I right click on my computer, go to properties, click on network identification tab, then hit properties again and try to change rjpserv4 to www, I get "a duplicate name exists on the network". This is not true for two reasons- first of all, there is no 'www' computer already on the network, secondly the server is not even accessing the domain (which is my second issue). I already have a domain that I want the server to join- rjp1. Before I upgraded from nt 4 to win2k server, there was no problem, I could join the domain fine, no problem. Now, when I right click on my computer, go to properties, click on network identification tab, then hit properties again, select domain, and type in rjp1, I get, "the specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted". This is, of course, if I keep rjpserv4 as the computer name, otherwise it gives me the www error over this one. I'm thinking there must be another step somewhere else that I have to complete before this works, but I don't know what. I don't have active directory installed right now, I CAN access the web (just nothing in my domain), and thanks in advance for any help I get.
If I wasn't clear, we have already set up ourselves a mail.domainname.com, but no www.domainname.com. I am attempting to get this server's c:\inetpub\wwwroot to be www.domainname.com.
And to make things short, the other thing is it won't let me join a domain that I know is there.
