Comment:

Cable modem going via ethernet to first computer, and second computer gets shared internet via another ethernet from the first computer (a chain).

I can connect to any site I want on the first computer. The same goes for the second computer, but it will only stay connected for a second. For instance - When I start to download the computing.net homepage, it will finish about halfway and then just quit. Then it will not do a damn thing for another 3 minutes or so. Then it will refresh after this 3 minutes, but only go as far as I went before.

Its pissing me off and Ill send money to whoever can figure this BS out. No firewalls, no security violations, etc are in the way.

Hi,

What do you mean "a chain"? Is it like this?

///// +-----+ //// +-----+ //// +-----+ ///
======|cable|-----x| 1st | //// | 2nd | ///
///// |modem| //// | P C |y----z| P C | ///
///// +-----+ //// +-----+ //// +-----+ ///

Does the 1st one have two ethernet NICs?
Suppose it does, what is the Default Gateway
of the 2nd? There should be 3 IP addresses
involved here(x, y, and z above), the 2nd
PC's default gateway must be "y".

First of all, how do you assign IP addresses
y and z? Is it statically assigned or DHCP
is enabled? The "x" should be obtained from
your ISP and you have no control of it. What
do they look like? Is it like 192.168.0.x?

Type ipconfig on the 2nd. What do you see?
Can you ping 1st from 2nd? Invoke ping.exe
with -t from the Command Prompt and it will
keep pinging until you hit Ctrl-C. Does it
continue pinging without saying "Timeout"
for a long period of time?

Try these things and let me know.

1) Try to connect only by the 2nd
PC to internet (and not the first,
but leave it ON).

2) if 1) works then it is very well
possible that your ISP doesnot allow
you to "double-surf"

Good Luck

Hi,
Ill clarify. I have the first computer with 2 NICs. The second computer has just one. The first computer is hooked to the interent via cable modem (which runs to the first NIC). I have internet connnection sharing enabled for this connection, so it send data to the 2nd ethernet card which is connected to the 2nd computer.

If I switch this around and make the 2nd computer the first for internet (hook it up to the modem) it will perform perfect (Just like the other computer will).

So basically, whichever computer is 2nd will not work correctly.

I did ping the first computer from the 2nd one, and it does get replies with no lost packets.

ICS can be a pain. Try statically assigning IP addresses to your main PC and client. You might want to add the address of your ISP's DNS server in the entry field for DNS in TCP/IP setup on both machines.

Hello again

2) if 1) works then it is very well
possible that your ISP doesnot allow
you to "double-surf"

3) ASK your ISP if it is possible
(=without changing your account= to
surf with your 2 PC's =at the same
time= )

4) Did you do 3 ? if yes you probably
will know your solution.

Good Luck

1) do NOT use ICS !

2) =email me your email-adres= and i will
send you a multi-page document which

Hi,

How do you configure the 2nd PC's network?
Although there are many things you can set,
all you need are:
IP address ............ 192.168.0.2
subnet mask ........... 255.255.255.0
default gateway ....... y
DNS Server ............ y

Try setting these numbers statically. The "y"
is the IP address of the 1st PC's 2nd side,
not the cable modem side. That should be
192.168.0.1 if you use the Win2K's default
Internet Connection Sharing. Make sure the 1st
PC's 2nd side is configured as:
IP address ............ 192.168.0.1
subnet mask ........... 255.255.255.0
default gateway .......
DNS Server ............

This is how I'm writing this from my 2nd PC.
