Do all pages fail to load? Is there a firewall installed? What happened previous to this problem? Have you tried another browser?

Internet is usually through isdn.

Brought the pooter back to mine, installed my wireless adapter and can get on the net with IE?

Which suggests it is a problem with the dialup isdn and IE?

Uhm, if IE is really working, would indicate a problem w/ connection...

Is this real ISDN or just regular dial up? Where's the terminator? Is this traffic bridged or do you have an ISDN interface in the pc? What WAN protocol are you using? Has the ISDN worked in the past?

My guess would be an MTU mismatch. i.e., small packets work, but larger packets requiring fragmentation get dropped.

Try to ping with a large packet size, i.e., ping -l 2048 yahoo.com

Does yahoo.com resolve? Or 'Unknown host'?

What about layer4? Can you:

telnet yahoo.com 80

and connect? or do you get a "Connect failed"?

Real isdn? Not sure but would say yes.
The rj is bigger than phone but smaller than lan but it does dial up to access internet.

ndis wan adapter

Worked before for ages but does not now.
Can only use ping when it is back in their home but will try if updates are unsuccessfull.

MTU mismatch?
Is the packet size be different from OE and IE?
Is this why the Email works but the browser doesn't?

No the max MTU remains the same, but the payload for e-mail is small if you're just STAT'ing

I assume this is pop3/smtp, if you:

sent or recieved an e-mail in OE, then MTU is probably not the issue

but, if 'send/receive' was just clicked, with no new messages received, and no errors, it could possibly be a mismatched MTU. (your MTU is higher or lower than the receiving end's)

But, thats just a guess...in reality, the IE 'cannot find servr/dns error' is rather generic and doesn't point to one specific problem...dns can be working and IE will still report that error.

You'd need to do some more testing, verify if you can send an e-mail, try a differnet browser, see if you can get a ping reply from a host name.

If the e-mail server is a hostname, and not a numbered IP address, then DNS is functioning properly...

But, If e-mail servers are IP addy's, and PING'ing google.com fails w/ 'unknown', then it is a DNS issue.

I don't really have enough info to diagnose...

But, you need to try and narrow the issue down, because the IE 'cannot be displayed' error is not a reliable troubleshooting message.

and good luck if it is an ISDN issue. ISDN is rather complicated, and I've barely scratched the surface. Don't you have some kind of a sysadmin to work w/ the ISDN connection?

Found the problem.

It was the proxy settings in the dialup connection, both boxes had ticks.

I'd assumed that it was supposed to be that way seeing as it connected and sent/received emails.

Somehow it must have been changed by something or even by someone?

This is probably why my wireless connection worked with IE.

Thanks for your help and input.
