Please help. I have Windows 2000 Professional and am having a problem with Internet Explorer. Anything that is Internet Explorer based, such as My Computer or Control Panel, won't open. Even Internet Explorer itself won't open. Whenever I try to open it, the computer freezes and I must re-boot the computer. I was told that I must delete everything on the computer and revert back to the Factory Installed Windows 98 SE, which I am trying to avoid. If anyone has an answer for me, please post one, or email me as soon as you can...this is urgent...THANKS...SP

I don't have an answer for you, but I am experiencing the same problems. The only exception, I think, is that my computer came with Win 2000 Professional. I recently added the TurboTax program, which automatically upgraded my IExplorer to v. 5.50. I never had a problem before, but since the IE upgrade, my computer has begun to freeze, as you described. I need help too!

I am having the same problem, Steve, but not quite as extreme as you. I am only having a problem opening Internet Explorer 6. I downloaded it a couple of days ago and it worked for about half a day. Then suddenly it locked while trying to display a page and generated the message that "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". Now whenever I try to open it, I get the same message and it will not launch. I tried uninstalling it from the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel which will load the previous version of Internet Explorer. That reverted me back to IE5 but it did not start either. I tried reinstalling IE6 but no luck. So whatever corrupted does not seem to be fixable by uninstalling and reinstalling. Anyone have any clues?

I found a solutiion which may be your problem on computing.net.
