I want to install W2K over a pre-installed version of XP. Windows won't "allow" me to do this. Error message: This CD-ROM is from an older version of Windows than the obe you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled". Anyone know of a way around this??

Hi Iain,
Enable the boot procedure (BIOS) in this order:
1. CD-ROM
2. HDDInsert the CD in your PC and Reboot
The system should ask you to press a key to boot from CD - do so.
Now do a standard Win2K installation and DELETE the former XP partion.
This have to run that way! :-)
I thing your problem is, that you started XP first and THAN you tried to install Win2000.

Why are you getting rid of XP? I tried it on my brother in-laws computer and I didn't see any big advantage to upgrading yet.

Can someone explain how to change the bios settings to boot from cdrom in windows XP. I am trying to install 2000 over XP and I am having the same problems mentioned above. Thanks a lot.

Hello all,
Even i am having a problem similar to this.A system is having NT and XP,i want 2000 on this.Uninstallation of xp and installation of 2000 without formatting can be done or not?I found from support microsoft that with other combinations,98-xp,through command prompt uninstallation of XP can be done and can restore 98,but there is nothing about my problem, could anyone help me in this regard.

You have NT/XP; which means you have C: = fat16? Also that NT has SP4 or later installed?
If so...
Run W2K setup from a CD boot (or the 4 floppies) and install W2K to wherever you want it.
W2K will overwrite/replace the XP mbr with its version; it will (should) find NT and add it to the W2K boot.ini. It will also have disabled XP access (W2K doesn't know about XP...). W2K will have installed it's version of assorted boot/start-up files replacing XP version.
Once you are OK at booting to NT/W2K, then use Explorer from NT/W2K to locate/delete XP (its parent folder), also the Pagefile.sys - if the latter is not shared with NT.
Providing C: = fat16, you could, and it may be wiser/better (first) to boot with a DOS (6.22) disk and run the " sys c: " command; this will reset the mbr to the DOS version. This will disable access to both NT and the soon to go XP. Afterwhich run W2K install etc.
If c: does not = fat16 - post back???
There are a 'few' other variations too that may allow you to lose XP and install W2K. If the above suggestions aren't practical, perhaps post back with more details of current drive/partition info - and what OS is where and file formats?
BACKUP data first - regardless???
In order to avoid confusions with various 'winnt' folders... I'd alter the default I/D for W2K (usually winnt) to W2K (or someting like)? The boot.ini entries will reflect whatever name you give the W2K folder.

I just bought the Vaio R505 that came with XP. I need W2K instead, mainlyt because of the software I consult for is still not supported on XP. So, I want to downgrade it to W2K. I have followed some of the instructions above, but am still unsucessful. I go into BIOS and add CD Rom as the first in the boot order by moving it to the top and adding an exclaimation point infront of it (!). The W2K Prof. CD is in the CDROM, but it still boots to XP. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Never mind about the last question. I had my head up my a#*. I realized that the CD I had for Win2000P was not boot-able. So, now I have a boot floppy and am on my way to the next problems around the corner.
