I am trying to install Windows 2000 on a Dell computer from Windows98. When I get to the prompt to start the installation - I am getting a message that the hard drive does not exist. Yet when I reboot the computer I can boot up into Window98 without any problems.

It sounds like a third party RAID or SCSI driver issue. If you are booting to the Windows 2000 CD, press F6 when prompted to and have the RAID or SCSI driver disk ready.

for a clean installation I would go ahead and format the drive and start their. But if you do have a scsi drive than you will need that driver in order for Win2K to recongnize the drive.

you might, before you trash your system, check to see if Dell supports W2K on your computer. Also make sure you don't have a partition encryption virus.
