You don't need any OS installed before hand. If intending to allow for a dual-boot (in the future?) then post back before starting to install W2K (or read post-21665 #5 on this W2K forum; covers the basics of it all).

You can go for a simple installation and just boot up with the four floppies and then follow on-screen prompts.

Simple install is just a single partition into which OS/applications and data will go.
Better arrangment is to have Primary partition for OS/applications, and Extended for data etc.

To achieve this set up it might be easier to use a '98 boot-disk with CDROM support (useful to have at any time) and partition the disk with Primary/Extended partitions.

An excellent tutorial on how to do this is at:

http://www.compguystechweb.com/index.html

(Fdisk/format)

Format both partitions as fat32. If you want one or both as ntfs then you can reformat it during W2K setup; or later, after W2K installed, you can convert fat32 to ntfs. As you may not be fully familiar with W2K(?) might be easier to stay with fat32 rather than ntfs initially?

Some useful guides on installing W2K:

(and a search in M$ KB for:

how to install windows 2000

will bring up the above link and other useful items too.

Other helpful how to's...

And if you go to:

http://www.windows2000faq.com

and look in the Installations section, you'll find an excellent 'how to' courtesy of John Savill. Browse around - there's lots there to know... One of the best NT/W2K (and XP?) help-sites around.

And a search via google.com (and/or dogpile.com) for:

installing windows 2000

will bring up many more.

Not to be mean or anything but if you find this really confusing to you. You might want to get somebody of computer savvy to help you install. Because if you dont do it right it can be harder to reverse you errors. Then to install.

Abby...

Don't be shy of having a go - one way to learn is by doing..., and a little research as well in advance is useful too.

Perhaps also invest in good W2K manual. A book is an excellent item to have around at all times - even if one still has to go on-line to get further input? (Forums (fora) are often prime sources of input/solutions.)

Mark Minasi (Sybex pubs) does a good manual - said to be the best for Server: Mastering Windows 2000 Server.

Robert Cowan (Que books) does a one for Pro (better than Minasi's "Mastering Wndows 2000 Pro" volume, according to some revewers):

Using Windows 2000 Special Edition (with CDROM); isbn: 0789721252

There are two editions of this book, so the isbn above may not be correct in one case.
