I know the edits for auto and config, but I'm getting a bad command error when trying to edit it. I thought that by formatting c: these files were put on with the root directory? I'm a little lost, they don't seem to be there. I'm installing 2000, and need smartdrive caching to keep it from taking 3 days. Thanks much.

The problem is that you can't find edit. Edit is NOT put on the hard drive when you format the system. Neither is config.sys or autoexec.bat. You don't need those two as you can just create them, but you do need edit.

are you trying to install booting from a 98 boot disk??..if you are then copy smartdrv.exe onto the floppy from a friends pc or somewhere and as soon as you boot with cd support then type smartdrv.exe and hit enter,,,then its just a case of installing using the winnt.exe from the i386 folder....
i've tried this and it works,

I have also done this, Daisy. Follow her advice everyone. Don't try i386 install without Smartdrv. Can take up to 3 hours or longer. Trust me!
